Snorkeling in Santanyí, Mallorca
The coastline of Santanyí, in the east of Mallorca, is a true paradise for snorkeling. And in the middle of a spring heatwave, there’s nothing better than a refreshing swim in the waters of Cala Esmeralda.
Although all the Balearic Islands—such as Ibiza and Formentera—as well as the Costa Blanca offer perfect spots to enjoy snorkeling (as documented in the corresponding guides), Mallorca—and specifically Santanyí—also boasts an abundance of opportunities.

Cala Esmeralda — the name says it all
With a name like that, we can expect nothing less than a cove of magnetic color that draws us into its inviting waters. Let’s follow the left-hand wall and we’ll come across a stretch of sand with radiant brightness. The wall is straight, though lined at its base with rocks where octopuses take shelter behind barricades of stones and mollusk shells they have previously devoured.
If we’re lucky enough to spot an octopus, we should simply observe it—no harassing it by trying to touch it… and certainly no spearing it.

Crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life
You’ll find a wealth of life in this cove. Many fry, or young fish, swim in groups in the shallow waters, such as bogues and small damselfish, which at this juvenile stage display an unmistakable intense neon-blue color. Meanwhile, schools of mullet and saddled seabream move across the sandy bottom, stirring it up in search of food. The rock wall, for its part, features small inlets like shallow hollows where relaxed specimens of seabream and mojarras linger, in a setting highlighted by colorful red algae.
An extraordinary encounter in these waters is with the pipefish, Syngnathus, always found near the seagrass (Posidonia), where it goes unnoticed due to its resemblance to the leaves—hence it is also known as the “Posidonia fish.”
A snorkeling route for the whole family

As we reach the end of the cove, the depth increases, with steep walls covered in algae. At any moment, we can turn back and continue enjoying the diversity of landscapes and marine life found in this उत्कृष्ट cove—yet another of the many wonderful spots along the Santanyí coastline.
And remember: always be mindful of boats, so it’s important to use a signaling buoy.
